Moravia and Czech Silesia

Since the 17th century successively a theatre, Reduta and market hall; today a theatre (for small scale opera and spoken drama) and concert hall. Mozart played here on Christmas 1767 - the Mozart plaque on the façade was recently replaced by a Mozart monument (pillar with putto) on the square. Many other famous composers appeared here, a.o. Liszt in 1840 and 1846.

Mozart stayed here in December 1767 to Januari 1768. Now public library.

Opera theatre until 1965, now spoken drama. Janáček bust from 1926 in the foyer; his Jenufa had its first performance here in 1904.

New opera theatre, built 1962-65. Janáček monument (S. Hanzl, 1974) in the garden.

Birthplace of the composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) with a commemorative plaque from 2007. The family soon moved to Vienna, where he turned out to be a child progidy.

The former organ school where Janáček worked from 1908 until the end of his life, today the music department of the Moravian museum with Janáček archive and Kaprálová archive. At the street façade is a Janáček bust and in the garden is the house which Janáček had built in 1910, kept in the original state and accessible.

In this park is a concert pavilon where Janáček appeared during his studies, 1866-69.

Smetana stayed here in 1873.

Club building from 1873 where Janáček worked from 1876 to 1888. Today a concert hall and the seat of various musical institutions.

Brno music academy.

Favourite pub of Janáček, in 1982 partly destroyed by fire. Present state unknown. Let’s hope the painting by Kalvoda of the composer with his friends has been saved.

Medieval castle, the former seat of rulers. In the garden is a monument for Janáček's teacher Pavel Křížkovský.

Former Augustinian monastery. Janáček studied here with Pavel Křížkovský between 1865 and 1869. A Křížkovský relief represents his favourite composition The drowned maiden. The museum is devoted to the famous botanist Gregor Mendel, who worked in the monastery. In the adjoining church of Mary Assumption, Janáček played a Suter organ from 1698 (not preserved).

He used to live round here, at first in Křížova 15 and 46, later (until 1910) on nr. 2 on this Mendel square, in his time called Klašterní námeští . These houses were all demolished, just like the nearby Beseda Brnenská where he worked.

Janáček at first studied and afterwards taught in the former teacher training school (now college).

Birthplace of the composer Pavel Haas(1899-1944). He was a pupil of Janáček.

Pavel Haas lived here from 1935 until 1940 - († Auschwitz 1944, after imprisonment in Terezín).

Graves of Janáček, †1928, and Vítěslava Kaprálová, †1940 in France; the grave was moved here in 1949.

The opera composer Hugo Weisgall was born in 1912 in this village, then called Eibenschitz. From 1920 he lived in the U.S.A., where he died in 1997.

Birthplace of the priest, writer and important folklore collector František Sušil (1804-1868). A Sušil monument is in a park near the primary school.

Hunting lodge 'The cunning little vixen', after Janáček’s opera. Nearby is a Janáček fountain.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) became Amtshaupmann here in 1773. He obtained a nice plaque - The castle was in restoration in 2009.

(German: Neudorf) - Schubert's father was born here in 1763, his Grandfather erected a St. Ludmila Chapel in 1782, now devoted to the ancestry of Schubert by means of a little exhibition.

In the fields between Vysoká and Žleb, at the Zelený potok, is a monument ‘Christ at the Mount of Olives’, which was erected in 1780 by Carl Schubert, the grandfather of the composer.

(German: Zuckmantel) - Birthplace of Schubert's mother, °1756 (Mozart's year of birth); now a hotel.

Carl Ditters worked from 1769 to 1794 in the service of bishop Schaffgotsch at the 'Johannesberg'. In 1773 he was raised to the peerage and changed his name into 'Ditters von Dittersdorf'.

In the local museum is a Dittersdorf exhibition, with authentic furniture from his house.

Birthplace of Janáček's teacher Pavel Křížkovský (1820-1885).

The Silesian theatre was built in 1805, last renovation was in 1991. Music theatre and spoken drama.

Beethoven (1806 and/or 1811) and Liszt (1846) stayed in this house.

(German: Grätz) - The Lichnowsky castle was visited by Beethoven (1806, 1811), Paganini (1828) and Liszt (1846, 1848). In the park are monuments of Beethoven and Liszt ('Liszts Platz').

Former 'Dr. Kleins Sanatorium', where Janáček died in 1928. Inside are a plaque and a bust. The building is now a part of the local hospital.

Cultural centre with concert hall of the ‘Janáček PO’.

The opera theatre was built in 1907 and got a new façade in 1956. Since 1990 it is named after Dvořák.

Museum and documentary centre about the zither.

One can meet this town in Janáček's piano cycle On a overgrown path. In the castle is a Janáček exhibition.

Jiří Třanovský (Georg Tranoscius) was born here in 1591/2 and got a monument. He is the author of Cithara Sanctorum, the favoured songbook of Czech protestants, and other church music.

The former school behind the parish church is the birthplace of Leoš Janáček (1854-1928); with memorial room. Later on he could play the organ in this church.

The church composer Jiří Třanovský (Georg Tranoscius, 1591/2-1637) lived and worked here as school principal from 1615 to 1625.

Open air museum with performances of Moravian folklore.

Janáček's cantata Na Soláni Čarták tells about a historical guard post on the Soláň hill. It is now a hotel. There are Janáček memorabilia in the neighbouring bell tower.

The operetta composer Leo Fall (1875-1925) was born in Olomouc.

The theatre was built in 1830. Mahler was its conductor in 1883. Since 1920 it houses own companies for opera, ballet and drama.

Gustav Mahler lived here in January-March 1883.

Splendid organ by Michael Engler from 1745, III/p/41, 2311 pipes incl. 32 feet Majorbaß, 2311 pipes. The front is in eleven parts. Yearly international organ festival.

The bishop ordination of archduke Rudolf found place in 1820 in the cathedral. But Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, intended for this event, was not yet finished.

At the house of cathedral dean, Mozart stayed on 28.X-23.XII 1767, seriously ill from smallpox.

Anton Schindler, Beethoven's 'famulus', was born here in 1796.

The composer Emil Axman (1887-1949) lived here 1893-1913.

(German: Kremsier) - Former palace of the archbishop of Olmütz. Biber worked here from 1663 to 1670, Vejvanovský from 1670 to 1694. Rich library with manuscripts by the two mentioned and by others, including Stamitz, Haydn and Mozart.

House of the baroque composer Pavel Vejvanovský (1630s-1693).

Franz Xaver Richter (1709-1789) was born here. His birthplace was demolished but there is a monument in the castle park. Richter worked at the court of Mannheim, like several of his compatriots.

Smetana's widow Betyna or Betty lived here with daughter Zdenka from 1885 until Betty’s death in 1908.

House of the Hába family, still occupied by his descendants. The neighbouring house, where the quarter tone composer Alois Hába (1893-1973) was born, was demolished in the 1970s but on the fallow parcel is a Hába monument since 1993.

Janáček monument from 1954 - Luhačovice was his favourite cure and holiday spot, from 1903 until 1928 he stayed 24 times here, in six different pensions of which only one - Ředitelský dům (1903+09) - has not survived - meeting in 1917 with Kamila Stösslová, from then his muse.

Smetana’s widow Betty (Bettina, Barbora) Smetanová-Ferdinandiová (1840-1908) died here during a cure and was interred on the local cemetery.

This hotel was opened in the summer of 1909 and was dedicated to Smetana. A small festival included concerts of works by Smeatna, lectures, a pelgrimage to the grave of his widow (>1778) and the unveiling by his grand-daughter of a Smetana bust by V. Mašek.

Cistercian monastery and important centre of Catholicism (papal visit in 1990). Organ by A. Richter, 1745; II/p/31 (orig. 34 stops).

This neo-gothic castle is a centre of folklore activities. It has a collection of over 400 instruments and a Skansen nearby. A folklore festival is yearly held in June.

Gustav Mahler stayed in September 1909 with the sugar factory owner Fritz Redlich and finished the composition of Das Lied von der Erde. Redlich's house became the office of the sugar company until ca. 2000, actual state unknown.

The composer Josef Triebensee worked from 1790 until 1809 in the Liechtenstein castle.

The operetta composer Ralph Benatzky of Im weißen Rößl was born here in 1884.

The huge Questenberg castle holds several memorabilia of its flourishing music life in the 18th century and of its main composer František Adam Miča, who worked here from 1722 until his death in 1744 (first opera on Czech text, 1730).

Birthplace (much altered) of the brothers Pavel and Antonín Vranický. Pavel (°1756) was a conductor, Antonín (°1761) was a violinist; both were composers and befriended with Haydn and Beethoven.

Birthplace of the composer Jan Novák (not related to Vitěslav Novák), °1921.

Memorial rooms for the Vranický brothers and for Jan Novák. The adjoining St. Peter & Paul church has an organ by Bedřich Semrád, 1765, II/p/23 (24) and also a small positiv by J. Silberbauer, 1780s, in the side chapel.

The composer František Křamař/Franz Krommer (1759-1831) was born here.

Parental house of Gustav Mahler, who lived here until 1875 and paid many later visits – exhibition.

Summer house of the composers Václav Kaprál and his gifted daughter Vítěslava Kaprálová (1915-1940). Her teacher Martinů visited her in 1938. In the garden is a symbolic grave of Vítěslava with the metal cross from her former grave in Montpellier (France) where she died from tuberculosis; she was reburied in Brno in 1949.

On the hotel is a plaque in commemoration of the meeting of Kaprálová and Martinů in 1938. Probably they were more than only pupil and teacher.

The picturesque well Studánka Vidulka, deep in the woods, was the favourite spot of Kaprálová for composing and has been dedicated to her memory.
