In Toledo cathedral the holy mass is celebrated according to the Visigothic rite, with Mozarabic plainchant, where elsewhere the Roman rite and Gregorian chant are practiced.

Charles V made Toledo the capital of the Empire and excellent musicians worked here, incl. Morales, Quevedo and Torrentes. In 1561 the court went to Madrid. Alfonso X ‘el Sabio’ (Cantigas de Santa Maria ) was born in Toledo in 1226.

Juan Bautista José Cabanilles was the best organist and organ composer of Spain. Born in 1644 (> 2201), he became organist in Valencia cathedral and stayed at this post until his death in 1712. The organ of his time is not extant. Another interesting musician from Valencia is Luis de Milán (first half of 15th c). His book El Maestro (1536) is important as the first collection of music for vihuela de mano, i.e. guitar. The Fantasias and songs contain careful verbal indications of tempo, then a new phenomenon.

Sevilla Cathedral is the largest gothic church of Europe. Francisco Guerrero, apart from Victoria the most prominent Spanish composer of his time, was born in Sevilla in 1528 and began his career in Sevilla Cathedral as a youngster, worked also in Jaén, made adventurous trips abroad (Italy, Holy Land - he was even captured and robbed by pirates) and after having returned to Sevilla he died in 1599. His grave is in the Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua. In the Capilla Real Alfonso X was buried; his heart and intestines are kept in Murcia. For his Cantigas see 0201.
