The composer Tomás Bretón was born in Salamanca in 1850. His monument from 1982 is the third of its kind (predecessors from 1923 and 1947).

Tomás Luis de Victoria was born in Ávila in 1548 and was a choirboy under maestro de capilla Bernardino de Ribera; he left Ávila for Italy in 1565. Antonio de Cabezón was married with a woman from Ávila and played the organ of the cathedral when staying here.

Between 1776 and 1785 Luigi Boccherini lived here in the service of the infant Don Luis de Bourbon. The Romanesque Real Monasterio de las Huelgas, now a Cistercian nunnery, is famous on account of the Codex Huelgas, an early 14th century collection of 45 monophonic and 140 polyphonic compositions, made for the convent and till today kept here. It is an important source of early polyphony.

The Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos has the disposition of 11thc. manuscripts with Mozarabic music. Today it is a centre of research and performance of Mozarabic and Gregorian plainchant and several CDs were produced; like a ‘Spanish Solesmes‘. On an Internet photo a plaque is shown, mentioning the house of Juan de Encina, and the street name Calle Ancha with the coat of arms of Léon. This way the address was partly found, but the house number could not be verified. Encina lived in León from 1521 until his death in 1530; he was buried in his native town Salamanca.

The cathedral of Saint Jacob is perhaps Europe‘s most important place of pilgrimage. There was a professional Capilla since 1525, but the 12th century Calixtus ms. already mentions joyful appearances by choirs of pilgrims, ‘& Teutons, Franks, Britons, Italians, singing and playing divers instruments‘. Musicians are depicted on the Portico de Gloria and in the crypt. From the baroque organs (ca. 1700) only the imposing cases are extant (new mechanism and pipes by Mascioni, 1977/2014; 3 man., 58 stops).

The tenor singer Julián Gayarre was born in Roncal in 1844. He began his career as a blacksmith but ended as an worldwide admired singer. He had a summer house built on the location of his birthplace and stayed there between 1879 and 1890, the year of his death; it is a Gayarre museum now. He was buried in Roncal. The burial monument by Mariano Benlliure was exhibited during the Paris World Exposition of 1900 and aroused the eagerness of queen María Cristina, but it landed at Roncal cemetery according to the singer‘s last will.
