Praza de Obradoiro, Santiago de Compostela
Catedral
The cathedral of Saint Jacob is perhaps Europe‘s most important place of pilgrimage. There was a professional Capilla since 1525, but the 12th century Calixtus ms. already mentions joyful appearances by choirs of pilgrims, ‘& Teutons, Franks, Britons, Italians, singing and playing divers instruments‘. Musicians are depicted on the Portico de Gloria and in the crypt. From the baroque organs (ca. 1700) only the imposing cases are extant (new mechanism and pipes by Mascioni, 1977/2014; 3 man., 58 stops).
