In spite of old denominations - Roman Aquae Mattiacae, medieval Visibada - the music history of the town seems to have started around 1800  -  Joachim Raff was piano teacher 1856-77, Hugo Riemann 1890-95 worked at the Fuchs'sches Konservatorium; Reger studied there 1890-92 and worked as teacher 1895-96.

Kiedrich plainchant

 

 

Old plainchant tradition following the 'Germanic' Mainzer Cantual  and stubbornly continued after introduction of the Gregorian Editio Vaticana. From 1857 supported by the English baronet Sir John Sutton, who had the old cantual printed. Still in use. Music fostered by landgrave Moritz der Gelehrte: John Dowland 1594-95 and Heinrich Schütz 1599-1615 (incl. four years of study in Italy on the landgrave's expense).  Erection of the Ottoneum.
Three famous organs by Scherer (1610-14); on the occasion of their renovation in 1722, Bach visited Kassel  as organ examiner. The organs have been lost.
Other musicians working here: Eberlin, Fiorillo, Reichardt, Spohr and Mahler.
After the last war drastic renovation of the town; all composers‘  houses lost.

Since the middle ages a free town of citizens, fairs (Buchmesse!) and coronations; on the occasion of the latter Lassus (1562), Hassler (1612 - he died during the festivities) and Salieri and Mozart (1790) appeared; Mozart had already stayed here in August 1763. In the former Barfüsserkirche , J. Andreas Herbst (1623-36, 1644-†1666) and Telemann (1712-21) worked. Mendelssohn married in Frankfurt with Cécile Jeanrenaud (1837)  -  Annual  Musikmesse (music fair) in October.
