musical history

Important centre of education, publishing and instrument making. The present musical topography of the town reveals the rich musical history well, although inevitably many traces are wiped away.
Musical life since the Middle Ages under supervision of church, city and university - no court; later on private enterprise prevailed - Opera performances since 1692, new theatres 1766 and 1868 with numerous FPs (Hiller, Marschner, Lortzing, Křenek, Weill) and the first compete Ring after Bayreuth.
Mozart visited the town 8-17.V.1789, studying Bach MSs and appearing in the Gewandhaus, a concert hall built in a cloth hall - from 1835 Mendelssohn conducted the Gewandhaus orchestra and made it famous -  new building 1884-1944, conductors: Reinecke, Nikisch, Furtwängler, Walter a.o. - Mendelssohn also established the music academy, the leading institute in the 19th century; pupils included foreigners as Gade, Grieg, Svendsen, Delius, Sullivan, Janáček.
